NOTE: to cast shield on yourself, equip the item and then right click it again. May be upgraded to Powershield, which absorbs 80% of incoming damage and reflects it back to the attacker, while also remaining active for longer. Provides the target with 50% damage absorption for a short period of time. Requires 2 purple gems to upgrade (shadow manipulator). May be upgraded to 4D Slip Omega, which increases Ninten's run speed by 50% for a short period of time after teleportation. Teleports Ninten to the selected location. Can be bought at the 'The Sty' Oddities Emporium* for 50 oincs. May be crafted with 1 blue gem, 3 reeds, 6 nitre (requires prestihatitator). Special item that can be used by Ninten to subdue an asthma attack. May be crafted with 2 Beefalo Wool (4 Cloth in Shipwrecked), 6 silk (requires science machine). 
Provides 3.3 sanity per minute while worn. May be crafted with 4 silk (requires science machine). Provides 4.4 sanity per minute while worn. Interestingly, the revised ending of Mother's English prototype and Mother 1+2 had given Ninten dialogue before the credits rolled. 
Similar to Ness' homesickness, Ninten has a condition that makes him incapable of performing actions in battle: asthma. He was named "Ken" in the Mother novel released in Japan, so Japanese fans commonly called him by that name for a while. When EarthBound Beginnings was released in Japan, he didn't have an official name. Ness, an arguably more well known character from the sequel EarthBound is considered to be based off of Ninten, having almost identical personalities and appearances. These include Lloyd, Ana, Teddy, and other characters who'll just briefly join his team. On his journey, Ninten will meet up with multiple other strange characters who'll ultimately be valuable team members. He goes off to journey to find out why exactly this had happened to him. In the game he set off on a journey after two of his household appliances came to life and attacked him, including a doll and a lamp. 
His name is a shortened version of Nintendo. Ninten ( JP Japanese: ニンテン), is the main protagonist of the Famicom classic video game, EarthBound Beginnings.
